The LOTTERY OF BIRTH is a social science argument that emphasizes that since no one chose the circumstances into which they were born into, people should not be held responsible for them being rich, poor, and so on.
Imagine a scenario in which, at birth, we knew nothing about ourselves or our conditions: whether we were born female or male, whether or not we were white, whether we had come into the world in a rural area in the northern region or in a hospital in America.
Imagine that you have absolutely no information about what fate has in store for you, If there is a possibility that you have been born female, would you accept as inevitable that you would earn 30% less than a man for doing the same work?
We do not choose the environment we live in, our parents, our religion, our values, our genetics, etc. We are even in a world we played no part in creating it. If you’ve to go back to the starting point in life, imagine you choosing how everything about you should be.
Your stature, ideologies, where you`re from, finances, and all that. Some individuals would have even preferred they were not born in Africa. We don’t define the starting point of our life.
Yes, we all make choices, but then, the choices that we make are made by the brain we didn`t choose. All these forces control our life.
So let’s use this example concerning morals, a serial killer, should he be held responsible for being evil? I believe no one can change the baseline conditions allotted to each person by nature or chance, but we can certainly make sure that those conditions do not come to represent a life-long handicap.
Equity can rectify inequality. The serial killer should be held responsible, but on the basis of the Lottery of birth, he should not be held responsible, this is because of the environment he comes from. Though the serial killer didn’t choose the starting point of his life, he can choose the mid and end point of his life.
In conclusion, one has to recognise his or her inherited identity and change the conditioning: When does the world stop shaping you, and when do you start shaping your world?
While the birth lottery shapes whom we might become, it does not define what we must become.
Buckle up! Your ego is about to take a humbling ride. The lottery of birth does not define you.
