Take All Appropriate Measures To Protect Ghana’s 30-year-old Democratic System – President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo To Ghanaians

Ghanaians have been urged by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to keep building the foundation for a new Ghanaian civilisation.

He claimed that would give the fundamental principles of justice and freedom, “upon which our nation was born,” their true meaning.

This was said by President Akufo-Addo on Friday, the eve of the Fourth Republic’s 30th anniversary celebration at the Jubilee House in Accra, in a broadcast to the entire nation.

With the comment that “30 years ago, we all vowed to establish, under God, a united nation, anchored in democratic values and the rule of law,” the President said Ghanaians should be extremely proud of themselves for reaching the milestone.

Despite the country’s struggles with its economic performance, President Akufo-Addo stated, “I do not doubt our collective resolve to work our way out of these challenges, and put our nation back on the path of progress and prosperity.”

Lets Protect our nation’s 30-year-old democratic system

Therefore, he asked Ghanaians to take all appropriate measures to protect the nation’s 30-year-old democratic system.

He said Ghanaians needed only to look backward in time to understand that a stable period of constitutional government and wise economic management resulted in prosperity.

He emphasised that the public should not give up on deepening democracy and ensuring the integrity of the democratic process either out of duty to the children, grandkids, and generations yet to be born.

However, President Akufo-Addo stressed that in order for the nation to continue on its path toward democracy, it was essential to increase transparency and accountability in the governance structures and create powerful institutions that could combat corruption and the misappropriation of public funds.

He stated that his administration had implemented some of the most audacious reforms and institutional building measures since independence to combat corruption in the public sector.

According to President Akufo-Addo, this included giving anti-corruption organisations financial support, passing the Right to Information Act, and creating the Office of the Special Prosecutor, an impartial organisation with the necessary professional capacity and the sole authority to look into and prosecute cases of corruption.

Ghana, A Beacon of Democracy

The Fourth Republic has seen eight presidential elections, five presidential transitions, and three peaceful handovers of power from one party to another, according to President Akufo-Addo.

Ghana is regarded as an example of democracy and stability in Africa because of its adherence to the principles of democratic accountability, human rights, and the rule of law.

The President said, “We have every reason to be proud of this, and the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth Republic should urge us, even more, to maintain this status.”
