Job Position: Research Officer – Social Scientist

Description

Under the supervision of the Country Representative, the research officer will contribute to the Aquatic Foods initiative and to the National Policies and Strategy initiative. The successful candidate will contribute to socio-economic survey design, implementation and analysis related to multifunctional landscapes and food, land and water policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the implementation of Aquatic Foods initiative research activities in Ghana and especially the deployment of aquatic food production in small reservoirs pilots;
  • Contribute to research on the socio-economic and environmental assessment of multifunctional systems interventions and investments (ex: aquatic food production in small reservoirs);
  • Contribute to the analysis of food, land and water policies and institutional landscape in Nigeria;
  • Design and conduct primary and secondary data collation, literature synthesis, qualitative interviews, and other research activities;
  • Contribute to data analysis, policy analysis, and statistical analysis;
  • Contribute to scientific publications, policy briefs, research papers, case studies, reports, presentations and other forms of science outputs and more general materials for dissemination to wider policy and public audiences;
  • Contribute to the curation of content and dissemination of communication products on various social media;
  • Contribute towards impact documentation;
  • Engage with national partners and in multi-stakeholder platforms.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Public Policy, Public Finance, Development Studies, Gender Sociology or closely related social science field.
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Essential:

  • Excellent skills for social sciences research and demonstrated ability to perform in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and report the results;
  • Experienced in conducting in-depth and systematic literature reviews and synthesis of academic publications, research reports, policies, etc;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and to work in a team-oriented multi-cultural environment;
  • Confidence speaking in English and strong written English skills;
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and build strong working relationships with a range of key stakeholders, especially in government agencies, national universities, international agencies, media, and civil society organizations;
  • Advanced knowledge of all main MS Office applications;

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join IWMI’s West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana as a Junior Research Officer.

As a Junior Research Officer, the position holder will assist in the organization and implementation of field activities (such as data collection, community mobilization, grassroots stakeholder consultation and surveys) in Ghana.

Northern Ghana serves as the agricultural production hub of the country, and unlike the south where two rainfall patterns are experienced; the north has only one rainy season within which farmers maximize production before the dry season sets in. The rainy season also comes with challenges such as heavy floods, which destroy farmlands, farm produce and infrastructure. Irrigation development offers the promise of food security and poverty alleviation in northern Ghana. However, most Rivers and some shallow groundwater normally dry up before the end of the dry season. Via several projects, IWMI team collaborate with other stakeholders to test, validate and scale water management technologies and practices to increase water productivity under irrigated conditions.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

• Participate in, and support, the experimental design of the field activities
• Conduct field trials on dry season vegetable production using solar powered irrigation technologies and oversee irrigation demonstration fields

The International Researcher – Innovation Scaling Impact Assessment will be responsible for implementing research on scalability and impact of agricultural innovations and coordinating Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Impact Assessment (MELIA) for the research for development projects that aims to track progress towards achieving project objectives and expected outcomes. The projects include but are not limited to the Innovation Lab for Small-Scale Irrigation (ILSSI), the Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING), Societal Development and Ecosystems Conservation in Sahelian Wetlands (SaWEL), Remote Sensing for Water Productivity (WaPoR), Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), and The Rethinking Market and Value Chains Initiative.

Duties and Responsibilities

MELIA for the innovation scaling research for development projects

• Establish and run a coherent MELIA system to provide reliable data for the innovation scaling research for development projects and ensure the duly submission of project deliverables.
• Supervise the project implementation, including monitoring progress, liaising with all project implementation teams and partners, and reporting on progress both internally and externally.
• Coordinate the updating of MELIA outcomes/outputs/indicators and refine data collection and reporting methods to monitor the progress of activities and outcomes.
• Strengthen the MELIA capacity of project teams and implementing partners to effectively track project results and impact.
• Facilitate baseline and end-line studies on projects’ interventions.
• Facilitate the preparation of project progress reports and updates.
• Assess and reflect on project progress and theory of change (MEL).
• Coordinate the assessment of Evaluate End of Initiative (EoI) outcomes and impacts.
• Act as a focal point for any external project evaluations to be conducted by the donor.
• Other tasks within the context of project implementation (e.g., research, learning events, policy engagement, supervision of research activities, and MSc/Ph.D. thesis writing) as assigned.

Scaling preparedness action (SPA)

• Review the projects’ progress, credibility, relevance, and scaling potential of the tested/developed innovation bundles in the projects.
• Profile the piloted innovation bundles along the intervention process.

Profile and identify scalable innovation bundles by:

• Designing, updating, and adapting the Causal Impact Assessment Learning (MELIA) along the intervention process to identify uptake and average or potential impact of the piloted innovation bundles; and
• Carrying out the Causal Impact Assessment and assessing the scalability of the piloting/testing/developing innovation bundles (intervention process)

Prepare the scaling preparedness for the projects’ scalable innovation bundles by:

• Facilitating the development of scaling strategy for the scalable innovation bundles; and
• Catalyzing scaling networks and partnerships

Systemic, adaptive scaling research Implementation

• Conduct research on innovation scaling related to market and value chains, water solutions, and farmer-led irrigation.
• Analyze scaling processes and pathways of the scalable innovation bundles.
• Develop monitoring and evaluation framework for impact assessment of scaling partnership.
• Contribute to the development of systemic, adaptive scaling toolkit.

Qualification Required & Experience

The successful candidate will posses the following:

• A Ph.D. degree in Business, Human Geography, Sociology, Development Economics, or a closely related field relevant to Water Resources Management, Agricultural Development, and Agricultural Innovation Systems and Scaling, Impact Assessment or similar.
• At least five years of relevant work experience, preferably in areas such as agricultural innovation scaling, value chain development, and private sector engagement.
• Experience in using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods and participatory research approaches to design and conduct field research activities across a range of problems, such as:

O agricultural value chain analysis and market study;
O innovation scaling partnerships, pathways, and processes;
O gender equality and social inclusion in innovation scaling; and
O interactive demand-driven learning for capacity building.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as the Researcher – Economist.

The position holder would be required to contribute to the design and execution of rigorous evaluations of technologies, interventions and policy reforms related to the food, land and water systems and especially multifunctional land and water systems. Such analyses employ quantitative evidence about human behavior and preferences to learn what works, where, for whom and why. they would also be required to undertake high-quality research in policy design, policy reform, and in the assessment and formulation of strategies to stimulate the catalyzing role of water in development pathways.

Most of this work will take an empirical, micro-econometric focus to support clear messages that speak to policy makers, development funders, and other key stakeholders in civil society. Research findings can lead to the improved design of programs and investments for scaling up and replication in diverse settings.

The position will provide the opportunity to build a research portfolio based on examination of primary and secondary data, and the application of impact evaluation methodologies in developing regions of Asia and Africa.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the design and execute impact assessments related to multifunctional land and water systems innovations (e.g., decision support tool for rice and fish, fish friendly irrigation, integrated production systems in small reservoirs, etc) to assess impacts related to productivity, poverty, food security, gender and youth inclusion, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and environmental outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with research teams to enhance economic analysis in interdisciplinary research projects involving social scientists, hydrologists, agricultural water management researchers and environmental scientists across IWMI’s offices in Africa and Asia.
  • Communicate research results for scaling and uptake of innovations to diverse audiences such as policymakers, funders, civil society, and the research community through peer-reviewed articles, research reports and other scientific and communication deliverables (e.g., policy guidelines and policy briefs).
  • Develop and lead economic research projects, including microeconomic analysis and impact assessment of new technologies, policies and programs, to support the transformation of food, land and water systems
  • Initiate, develop and maintain collaboration with research partners, governments and development investors in Africa and in Asia.
  • Fulfil project management duties by working with colleagues in information and knowledge management group, human resources, finance and project management office
  • Contribute to capacity building of partners, students and interns.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • PhD in Economics (Development Economics, Agricultural Economics or Environmental Economics), with a specialization in impact evaluation of development projects.
  • At least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience;
  • Sustained and consistent excellent publications record in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Expertise and experience in designing and conducting impact evaluation of water and land innovations, including sample and survey design, questionnaire design, pilot testing, micro-econometric data analysis, quality assurance, hypothesis testing, publication and communication of results.
  • Experience with randomized control trials, natural experiments and quasi-experimental impact evaluation methods.
  • Demonstrated facility with micro-econometric analysis of household survey data using standard econometric software, such as for hypothesis testing and prediction.
  • Good understanding of economic theory and principles and ability to apply such knowledge to water, land and ecosystems management issues as they relate to food security and climate change.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective interactions and stakeholder engagement in multicultural settings with other researchers and with policymakers, donors, and civil society, facilitating impact of research and capacity strengthening
  • Experience of living, working and traveling in developing countries.
  • Ability to independently design and conduct research;
  • Capacity to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural research teams while assuring the quality and relevance of project outcomes and promoting a workplace culture of knowledge sharing and transfer.

A Regional Communications & Knowledge Management Coordinator is needed at IWMI

Description

The Communications & Knowledge Management Expert will lead the development and delivery of a communication strategy required for achieving impact primarily for the IWMI Western Africa office, and especially for the regional integrated initiative. The Expert will provide communications and public relations support to the IWMI-WA Country Representative, Project Leaders and a team of researchers undertaking various research projects in the region.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The position holder will work closely with the Project Leader, Country Representative and Communication & Knowledge Management team to:

  • Develop and implement communication and knowledge management action plans that include media outreach and social media content creation for research projects
  • Conceptualize and develop digital, printed and multimedia communications materials including presentations, press releases, fliers, brochures, posters, web and social media campaigns, infographics, informational videos, and blogs based on insights research projects and according to donor requirements and IWMI branding guidelines
  • Identify and filter key messages and recommendations from technical research reports and package for dissemination to different stakeholders.
  • Develop news stories and opinion articles, cultivate relationships with journalists, coordinate interviews with researchers and organize media participation in field visits and key events.
  • Perform writing, editing and, translating services to the research teams.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with the media and establish a media outlet database for the project.
  • Public relations and engagement coordination: engage/network, support the identification of key clients and partners, maintain relevant information on and with them, and engage with research.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in development planning and policy making.
  • Compile, edit and distribute regular newsletters to targeted audiences and update project mailing lists.
  • Support the documentation of internal and external meetings and workshops with clients and partners.
  • Provide editorial assistance to Researchers.
  • Learn and share – develop systems to support learning, reflection and sharing amongst teams, projects and partners.
  • Liaise with IWMI HQ and CGIAR communication and KM Coordinators to provide information and materials as needed.
  • Contribute to the preparation of project proposals to ensure inclusion of clear communications and uptake strategies, and activities.
  • Manage all communications sub-contracts and service providers needed by the office and/or project teams e.g. graphic design firms, videographers, photographers etc.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • A Master’s degree in journalism/mass communication or any discipline relevant to IWMI’s mandate eg: in natural / physical sciences or social sciences
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional and applied experience
  • Experience in the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of communications and knowledge management plans in multi-disciplinary research for development programs
  • Experience in content writing and editing for all relevant media platforms
  • Demonstrated success in working on international programs and in international work environment
  • Basic understanding and willingness to consider gender and inclusion in communication materials
  • Experience in writing on scientific and development issues
  • Experience working in Western Africa

Desirable:

  • Additional degree in public relations, journalism or mass communication or related subjects

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French.
  • A demonstrated ability to use various communication channels, social media and collaborative tools to communicate research for development studies to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work with partners to achieve joint objectives
  • Strong analytical mind, the ability to listen carefully, synthesize and communicate persuasively
  • Innovative, positive attitudes and the ability to take independent initiative
  • Good organizational and planning abilities
  • Highly computer literate with capability in Microsoft Office

  • Ability to write script and produce videos for social media and other promotional purposes
