Nigerian pop sensation Davido has disclosed that his strict father did not mind locking him up because he had decided to become a musician as a job.
Davido said that his father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, detained him multiple times because he was opposed to his singing profession in a special episode of New York’s Ebro in the Morning Program on Hot 97FM.
The “Unavailable” hitmaker says he was skipping school at the time to hit the studios, which infuriated his scholarly father.
On one occasion, Davido described how, at his father’s command, the police surrounded him and imprisoned him.
He claimed that was the moment he realized his father was a strict parent and made the decision to prioritize his schooling.
“He kept on doing it [arresting me]. Then there was one time, this is where I knew that ‘Oh I’m lit!’. They [the police] came and got me.
“Then I’m in the cell and the dude that got the keys his phone rings, and it’s my song! I said ‘that’s me’. He said ‘you’re Davido?’ I said ‘yes!’. He was very shocked and he let me go.”
Davido also claimed that his father dispatched police to arrest him and interrupt performances at which he was scheduled to appear on several occasions.
“He sent police to get me… like he sees a billboard; for example, ‘Davido performing, Wizkid performing’.
He would send police to arrest everybody – the show promoter if you’re there (you would be arrested),” he told the FM station as he and the show presenters laughed about it.
When asked when his dad blessed his career, he said it was after one of the singles he had released became so popular the President of Nigeria at the time played it.
