CEO of the Pot of Shuga restaurant, Abena Serwaa Frimpong, popularly known as Shugatiti has filed a defamation lawsuit against a popular Ghanaian pastor, Frank Gogo and some two others.

The lawsuit stems from allegations made by Prophet Ekatso that Shugatiti is a demon of the sea known as “Mami Wata”, a mermaid.

Speaking on Oman Channel with host Msomfo Efia Empress the prophet alleged that the entrepreneur was using exoteric powers to lure people to buy her food.

“She is possessed by a marine spirit and all those who visit her restaurant will end up being possessed. She is a queen in the realms of the spirit. Anyone who has eaten in her restaurant and is a woman has been possessed.”

“She has been sent by the devil to destroy. She can possess women who visit her restaurant merely by talking to you or having an encounter with you…all those who visit her restaurant should be very careful,” the pastor declared in the interview.

These claims which have been vehemently denied by Shugatiti led her to sue the pastor, the media house, Mama Radio GH and host Msomfo Efia Empress in court to clear her name.

According to the social media nudist, the allegations are entirely false and have caused irreparable damages to her brand and reputation.

Sharing the news of the defamation suit on her official Twitter account, Shugatiti said she was ready to meet the man of God in court for him to prove the allegations.

“Members of Frank Gogo (Ekatso) church inform your pastor to meet me in court to prove that I’m a demon of the sea with evidence of entering the sea,” the tweet said.

Based on the court documents obtained, it is alleged that the “plaintiff is a demon-possessed person of questionable character and means and hence it is dangerous for ordinary right-thinking members of society to be associated, acquainted or have any contact whatsoever with the dentist.”

Shugatiti with the assistance of her lawyer in her statement of claim is asking the court to declare “That the words uttered by defendants on Oman Channel which was published on 16th April on OMAN Channel can be found on Youtube is defamatory “.

It also asks for a number of claims including “General damages for defamation of character” “Punitive damages” and 4 other claims.

Obrafour sues Drake $10m for copyright infringement https://newsbitgh.com/obrafour-sues-drake-10m-for-copyright-infringement/ https://newsbitgh.com/obrafour-sues-drake-10m-for-copyright-infringement/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2023 18:57:46 +0000 https://newsbitgh.com/?p=7989

Drake is being sued by legendary Ghanaian rapper Obrafour for using a sample of his song “Calling My Name” from the Honestly Never mind album that was taken from Obrafour’s 2003 remix of “Oye Ohene.”

Obrafour claimed in the paperwork he submitted to a New York court that Drake’s unauthorised sampling of his music violated his copyright.

“Defendants released the Infringing Work on June 17, 2022, despite the fact that an agent of one or more Defendants had previously contacted Obrafour seeking to obtain Obrafour’s permission for the use of the Copyrighted Work in the Infringing Work.”

“Obrafour never granted Defendants permission to use the Copyrighted Work and the Infringing work was released mere days later,” parts of the document read.
The Ghanaian rapper indicated that Drake and other defendants following the release of ‘Calling My Name’ has greatly benefited from his work.

“To date, over the mere 304 days that have elapsed since the Infringing Work was released, the Infringing Work has already been streamed over 4.1 million times on YouTube, streamed over 47,442,160 times on Spotify, and streamed tens of millions of times on Apple Music.”

“In addition to generating enormous sums of global streams and sales across numerous platforms, the Infringing Work has also been exploited by the Defendants via other means, including live performance.”

Among others, Obrafour is seeking damages in an amount not less than $10,000,000.
He is also seeking an injunction requiring the “defendants and their agents, employees, officers, attorneys, successors, licensees, partners, and assigns, and all persons acting in concert or participation with each or any one of them, to cease directly and indirectly infringing, and causing, enabling, facilitating, encouraging, promoting, inducing, and/or participating in the infringement of any of Obrafour’s rights protected by the Copyright Act.”

Meanwhile, other defendants in the suit include writers, producers, performers, record labels, entertainment companies, publishers, managers, administrators, and/or distributors of the infringing work.

In June 2022, Canadian rapper, Drake surprised his fans with ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ but for Ghanaians, it was a double surprise.

On Track 6, ‘Calling My Name’, Drake sampled a beloved popular song from one of Ghana’s best musicians alive, Obrafour.

The sample is found at 0:53 seconds of the Drake tune, where it transitions into a house music vibe sending the song into a different type of ambiance compared to its initial trajectory.
“Killa cut!” is the chant heard multiple times.
That part was sung by Mantse Aryeequaye as an opener to the late 2003 remix of ‘Oye Ohene’ off the Ntete Pa album.
